That was when the former vice president of the United States angrily cut me off. I couldn’t believe what happened next. His words: “Take a look at my record, child. Look at my record.”
If my friend Idreese hadn't been recording the interaction, I may have doubted what I had heard and my perception of what he’d said. I was a potential voter — a civically engaged young person attending his campaign event — and I was patronized and treated with condescension. My age seemingly undermined the validity of my question in Biden’s eyes, and my presence was viewed as an annoyance.
In the moment, I was angered and taken aback. But now, I see the encounter as a reminder of the power of my own voice; the ability I have, in my thoughts and actions, to hold politicians like Joe Biden accountable.

More of a media creation than an actual sensation, Beto ran because . . . If he had been able to articulate it, he'd still be in the race.

The media cheered him on . . . until he started talking about the wars. Then they went after him -- starting with the 'fact check' provided by THE WASHINGTON POST. They repeatedly undermined him.

After the national support he got from the press when he ran for the Senate, it must have been confusing for him to see the same press turn on him.

War Hawk Joe Biden hasn't dropped out. However, his campaign is still reeling from Friday's revelation that he's polling fourth in Iowa. Fourth.

Alexander Burns (NEW YORK TIMES) reported:

Ms. Warren appears to have solidified her gains in the first voting state while Mr. Buttigieg has climbed quickly to catch up with Mr. Sanders and overtake Mr. Biden, the onetime front-runner. Ms. Warren is drawing support from 22 percent of likely caucusgoers, while Mr. Sanders is at 19 percent, followed by Mr. Buttigieg at 18 percent and Mr. Biden at 17 percent.

The survey is full of alarming signs for Mr. Biden, who entered the race in April at the top of the polls in Iowa and nationally. He is still in the lead in most national polls, but his comparatively weak position in the earliest primary and caucus states now presents a serious threat to his candidacy. And Mr. Biden’s unsteadiness appears to have opened a path in the race for other Democrats closer to the political middle, particularly Mr. Buttigieg.

Natasha Korecki (POLITICO) adds:

Biden’s campaign, meanwhile, has been forced to scale down expectations of his performance here. He has already seen Warren overtake him in the polls and is also battling the grassroots energy behind Sanders.

“You might expect that a frontrunner is going to lose some ground as other candidates become more visible,” said Selzer. “It’s not just that there’s not enough numbers to go around. It’s that he’s not wearing well. It’s the trend, it’s the decline.”

Poor Joe. Turns out "more of the same" is not a rallying cry in an election.

If Biden comes in fourth in Iowa, it's very hard for him to come in first in South Carolina. The argument for Joe is that he's electable. Joe's campaign has been preparing the press for the likely reality that he loses Iowa and then New Hampshire. They're trying to say that doesn't matter because he will win South Carolina. Not likely if he loses Iowa and New Hampshire. The two early losses would force many voters in South Carolina to reconsider the claim that Joe is most electable. That's what's driven and sad and pathetic campaign. It's protected him from his problematic behavior with women, it's protected him from his estranged relationship with the truth. If he loses Iowa and New Hampshire, he's just another failed candidate.

Kyle Balluck (THE HILL) mangles a new poll:

Front-runner Joe Biden’s support held steady in a new poll of the 2020 Democratic presidential race that saw Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg make gains.
The poll from ABC News and The Washington Post released early Sunday found Biden with 27 percent support from Democrats and independents who lean toward the party, unchanged from a similar survey in early September.
Warren, however, gained 4 percentage points, climbing from 17 percent to 21 percent. The results mark a new high in the poll for the senator, ABC News noted.
Buttigieg, who is now at 7 percent, added 3 points since early September.
According to the survey, support for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) was also constant, holding at 19 percent.

So the actual news would be that Elizabeth Warren and Pete Buttigieg increased their numbers, while Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders -- and Bernie Sanders -- remained steady.

Of the protests, FORT RUSS NEWS claims:

A leading Lebanese newspaper revealed the role played by the US embassy in the October protest rallies in Iraq which turned violent. The Arabic-language al-Akhbar paper wrote on Saturday that it has gained access to a security document that shows the US mission’s role in organizing a secret formation to add fuel to the flames of unrest in Iraq last month.

According to the newspaper, the US embassy has formed a high committee of protests, which coordinated field activities during the protests and the embassy provided it with intelligence and a number of politicians and government workers supported it.

A psychological operations team to guide the media and spread rumors, an electronic mobilization team to lead people through social media, a team, trained in Erbil and Amman, to report on the security services’ mistakes and produce fake news on the protests, a team to exert international pressures on the Iraqi government, to organize protests in front of Iraq’s embassies in foreign states, a team for releasing reports about the protest rallies in cooperation with different media outlets, an IT team to resolve problems related to filtering of the internet and social media, a medical team stationed near the protestors and hospitals to help the wounded and a team to provide logistical support, including food, water and preliminary aid, to the protestors were also formed by the US embassy’s secret committee to foment unrests in Iraq, al-Akhbar added.

For background on FORT RUSS NEWS, go to SOURCE WATCH. Despite their questionable ties, they could be right. Anything is possible. However, it doesn't really pass the common sense test. If the US government was orchestrating these protests in Iraq -- even just encouraging them -- their would have been immediate press coverage in the US. But these protests have not gotten a great deal of traction in the US. For example, 60 MINUTES covered Joe Biden Sunday, not the Iraq protests. The US government is very good at getting the press to cover what it wants covered. So if this claim were accurate, we should have been seeing this promoted non-stop the way the Hong Kong protests (or 'protests') have been.

We're not going to play gatekeeper and pretend that this belief is not out there (that the US government is pulling the strings) but we're also not going to toss common sense out the window and pretend like this is what is happening. It's possible, many things are possible, but it seems unlikely.

An editorial at GULF NEWS notes:

The repression of antigovernment protests in Iraq is an indication of how bankrupt the government has become. While the Iraqi people are starving and desperate for change, taking to the streets to demand the resignation of the government whom they see as ineffective, the government has done practically nothing to address their concerns.

Instead of listening, they have responded with violence — an indication that dissent will not be tolerated in the supposed democracy. Freedom of speech and expression should be a staple of any functioning democracy.

The editorial goes on to falsely claim that women appeared at the Baghdad protests, for the first time, on Saturday. That's how AP damages everyone when they misreport (see Sunday's "AP strips women out of the coverage yet again"). They have pushed that claim, AP has, and now it is infecting other outlets.

Nabil Salah (THE NEW ARAB) reported of Friday's Baghdad protests:

Neither the downpours of live ammunition, excessive – and crippling – deployment of tear gas canisters nor on-the-loose snipers could break the spirit of young Iraqis as they resumed their uprising on October 25 against a regime that has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of the masses.

Men, women and even children from all walks of life have marched to Baghdad’s Tahrir square since the early hours of the morning.

How is that confusing? It's confusing -- don't know why -- to the ASSOCIATED PRESS.

Friday, on PRI's THE WORLD, Marco Werman spoke with Sinan Antoon (ALJAZEERA) about the protests and Sinan noted men and women -- and women -- were taking part. That was Friday. Women did not suddenly begin participating on Saturday, it's just that AP refused to note them until Saturday.

"DO YOU THINK SHE'S PRETTY?" SHE ASKED BILL.

HE NODDED, PATTED HER ON THE THIGH AND SAID, "TEN MINUTES A DAY, BABE, TEN MINUTES A DAY."

In the US, the race for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination continues. Would Michael Bloomberg enter that race? The overly confident former mayor of New York City denied his plans to run recently. Carlos Greer (NEW YORK POST) reports:

Former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg played it cool when people urged him to run for president at the Hudson River Park annual gala, where he was honored Thursday night.
“He brushed off whispers in the room of a presidential run and gave his signature crooked smile when one table held up signs that read ‘Bloomberg 2020,’ ” a guest told Page Six. Bloomberg sat with fellow honoree Lucy Liu and her “Elementary” co-star Aidan Quinn.

That was Thursday. Edward Helmore (GUARDIAN) reports today:

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg is at it again – teasing a presidential run. At 77, he won’t even be the oldest in the field, and the billionaire is certainly not short of funding to be able to throw his hat in the ring.
Over the past several weeks, he’s signaled renewed interest in the democratic nomination, telling friends and associates he’s “still looking at” running for president. But he has cautioned he’d only join the race if former vice-president Joe Biden’s faltering centrist campaign takes a decisive hit or pulls out early in primary season, according to a report by CNBC.

Biden’s collapse would likely leave Elizabeth Warren as frontrunner, a liberal candidate with whom he has repeatedly clashed over her anti-corporate policies and fears she will push the party too far to the left and eliminate the chance of a Democratic candidate unseating Donald Trump next year.

I love this, by the way, this press notion that Elizabeth Warren is too left for voters which, as Joe Biden crumbles, is put with the neoliberal claim that Pete, the man who's done nothing but be mayor, is a better candidate. how so?

Hillary Clinton, in 2016, remember, felt the need to massage anxiety over Bill Clinton being First Spouse by saying he wouldn't be planning state dinners (apparently, had she won, she'd be both the president and the first lady). It was idiotic and we called it out in real time. But the 'pragmatic' campaign of Hillary Clinton, insisted that America was wary of a man in the first lady role.

So Hillary had to do that in 2016 -- or felt she had to -- but Pete and his ale spouse are just the ticket four years later?

I'm not saying he couldn't win. I am saying you are vastly under-estimating American's obvious homophobia (not latent) when you think, if gifted with the nomination, Pete would just sail to victory.

Pete has a chance at the presidency, all the candidates do. But to repeatedly stress and sell him as the 'safe' choice is to ignore reality.

Again, in 2016, Hillary's campaign -- based on polling -- felt the need to stress that Bill would not be planning dinners. That was four years ago.

Add male anxiety to homophobia and you've got some rough waters to navigate. Can they be navigated? Yes. But don't pretend it would be easy.

There's nothing about Pete that makes him an easy choice. He has a huge lack of experience. Others won't be as timid or stupid as Beto O'Rourke who backed down when Pete tried to challenge him. Others will point out, "You were a glorified secretary in Afghanistan. You are not a combat veteran. The only medal you have is the medal everyone gets. Stop pretending you have some vast miliary experience." And being the mayor presiding over what? Racial killings by the police? Oh, that's a wonderful recommendation.
