Yesterday, a historic referendum was held in northern Iraq. Results above from RUDAW, the official results will be released later-- some day two to three days but Susannah George (AP) reports the results are expected this evening. .

RUDAW explained the referendum as follows:

More than five million people are eligible to vote when the people of Kurdistan head to the polls on Monday, September 25, to decide whether they want to leave or stay with Iraq.

With an estimated global population of between 30 and 40 million, the Kurds are one of the largest ethnic groups without a state. Under the post-WWI Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, Kurdish lands were divided between Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria.

Kurds in all four parts of what is known as Greater Kurdistan have faced persecution, discrimination, and genocide, and have fought at times for greater rights, autonomy, and independence.

In Iraq, Kurds make up 17 to 20 percent of the total population. In the Kurdistan Region of northern Iraq, Kurds have had a semi-autonomous government since a no-fly zone was established over their lands in 1991 after the first Gulf War.

The new Iraqi constitution that came into effect in 2005, after the US-led invasion of 2003, recognized the Kurdistan Region as a federal region with its own legislature and armed forces, the Peshmerga. Both Erbil and Baghdad have accused the other of violating the constitution.

The September 25 referendum will take place in Kurdistan of Iraq only, not neighbouring countries.

It's worth noting that this vote was put together in about three months. It's also worth noting that provincial elections were supposed to have taken place throughout Iraq earlier this year, then pushed back to September, then pushed back to next year.

In three days, the KRG and Kirkuk are scheduled to hold a referendum on whether or not they should remain a part of the Baghdad-based government.

As the vote looms, panic ensues among those opposed to the vote.

Denouncing the move are the foreign ministers of Iraq, Turkey and Iran. The three elected to meet up in New York. Tuvan Gumrukcu and Tulay Karadeniz (INDEPENDENT) type:

In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the three countries voiced concerns that the referendum would endanger the gains Iraq has made against Islamic State, and reiterated their fears over the potential for new conflicts in the region.

How would a vote "endanger the gains Iraq has made against Islamic State"?

They repeat that fear over and over and no one ever asks them to define it.

The KRG and the Baghdad-based government do not get along and have not for years.

Has that prevented them working together in Mosul?

Why would this be any different?

It wouldn't.

But fear and the trash that peddles it always runs wild.

Let's play their game for just a second. The Baghdad-based government manages to shut down the vote at the last minute, how does that help the struggle against ISIS?

Starting with Hillary Clinton who is apparently on a mission to become this century's John and Martha Mitchell combined. Sloppy drunk? It's in there. It's all in the book. It's dishy and trashy and someone thought she was presidential?

If she had a better ghost writer, she might be able to set herself up as the next Jaqueline Susann.

It's dishy and trashy and she's yet again managed to set a bad example to all.

The good news for the country?

It's unlikely she'll try for president next go round.

We know she won't accept the results -- even if she pledges to do so.

Her book is another ghost written embarrassment intended to make money. She's shameless in sporting her greed which includes outrageous prices for tickets to see her.

And she wonders why the working class felt she was out of touch with their issues?

Two questions that need to be answered.

First, why are US taxpayers paying for Secret Service protection?

She's getting millions for this book so why does the American people have to pay for her protection at her book promotion efforts?

Shouldn't Hillary pick up that tab?

Second, she voted for the Iraq War.

How much of the book's proceeds will she be donating to veterans?

Her greed must be her chief motivator.

When is enough for Hillary?

When does she give back?

She said her vote for the war was a mistake.

Okay, atone for your mistake, don't just line your own pockets.

She voted for the war.

The war that still drags on.

EVEN A COURT FINDING SHE WAS GUILTY OF LYING, TRICKERY AND RIGGING AN ELECTION DIDN'T TAKE OUT THE CROOK:

The Court thus assumes that the DNC and Wasserman Schultz preferred Hillary Clinton as the Democratic candidate for president over Bernie Sanders or any other Democratic candidate. It assumes that they stockpiled information useful to the Clinton campaign. It assumes that they devoted their resources to assist Clinton in securing the party’s nomination and opposing other Democratic candidates. And it assumes that they engaged in these surreptitious acts while publically proclaiming they were completely neutral, fair, and impartial.

A PURGE IS NEEDED IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY -- DEBBIE AND HER CRIMES ARE A STAIN ON THE PARTY. SHE MUST BE EXPELLED FROM THE PARTY.

REACHED FOR COMMENT, DEBBIE BARED HER FANGS, GROWLED, AND PAUSED FROM PISSING IN THE STREET LONG ENOUGH TO SNARL, "I CAN'T BE TAKEN DOWN. I AM A RABID BEAST AND I WILL RIP APART ANYONE WHO TRIES!"

On a related note, glad for Patty's success but James Cameron is correct, WONDER WOMAN was not about feminism not was the character especially strong. Women in James' films have tended to not only be more complex, but stronger as well.

And while I'm happy for Patty's success, surely she doesn't believe she wrote the screenplay.

Because she didn't.

Allan Heinberg did.

It's actually an embarrassing film -- both for being pro-war (that's not what Princess Diana was about) and for refusing to grapple with the world.

It's movie-land. Meaning they set it in WWI because they didn't want African-American characters. And movie-knowledge allows them to get away with that. (Meaning old movies rarely featured African-Americans in anything other than bit parts so the White landscape in WONDER WOMAN -- which is not reflective of the era -- does merge with what many see as the past via feature films.)

When Patty can leave the cartoonish, glorification of war, she might have something to be proud of.

Until then, she should probably shut her mouth or others will step forward to respond as I have done-- this is the first time I've ever commented publicly on that film. (As noted before, James Cameron is a friend.)

The Whiteness of WONDER WOMAN is truly offensive.

(And don't bring up Gal. She's not playing a Jew, she's playing a White Amazon. Do we want to explore the damage done to our society via enforced "passing"? Didn't think so.)

The longer this issue of independence is postponed, the longer some will insist the US must remain in Iraq.

KURDISTAN 24 reports:

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has scheduled and insists on holding a referendum on independence for the Kurdistan Region on Sep. 25, 2017, to decide whether or not to secede from the rest of Iraq.
Barzani stated that the move toward independence is part of a peaceful process aimed at deterring violence. “The main purpose [of the referendum] is to prevent further tragedies and wars from taking place[in the future].”
Regarding the timing of the vote, the President noted that if the Kurdistan Region waited for others to accept its decision, the right time would never come.

“Independence is a legitimate claim for our people, and the referendum can rightfully be held, at the earliest opportunity, so the world can be made aware of the will of the people of Kurdistan… We do not want to spend another 100-years repeating the same tragedies tied to the Iraqi state.”

What a change that is from the Jalal Talabani -- the ridiculous Jalal.

Talabani told a Turkish newspaper in an interview published on Monday that it would not be realistic to believe that an independent Kurdish state could survive as it is likely that neighboring countries Turkey , Iran and Syria would close their borders.

"I tell my Turkish brothers not to fear that Kurds will declare independence. It is an advantage for Kurds to stay within the borders of Iraq in terms of their economic, cultural, social and political interests," he told in the interview.

Sabah got the interview and they quote Talabani stating, "Iraq will not be separated and the civil war is over" and "The ideal of a united Kurdistan is just a dream written in poetry. I do not deny that there are poems devoted to the notion of a united Kurdistan. But we can not continue to dream." If accurate, Talabani's remarks will spark anger among some Kurds. And it may be a great deal of anger and it may be among many Iraqi Kurds.

Jalal Talabani, the sell out. The only time he ever fought was to be first in line at the all-you-can-eat buffet.

Regardless of how the vote turns out, no one can claim Barzani didn't try.
