From the wires

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- DC.

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX present two reports today and note that the American military fatality count in Iraq has now passed 2,700. Over 2700 Americans killed in Bully Boy's illegal war of choice.

From The Third Estate Sunday Review -- "Editorial: Darrell Anderson Needs You"

Darrell Anderson. Here's the back story. In January 2003, Darrel Anderson joined the Army. He was sent to Iraq and injured by a roadside bomb. Awarded the Purple Heart, when facing a second deployment to Iraq, Anderson decided to self-check out (January 2005). Like Jeremy Hinzman, Brandon Hughey, Patrick Hart, Kyle Snyder and an estimated 220-plus others, Anderson went to Canada.
In Canada, he applied for refugee status -- a status regularly granted during the Vietnam era but one Canada has thus far refused to grant to any war resister. Recently, Anderson's attorney apparently missed a deadline for the paper work on that issue.
However, Anderson met Gail Greer when she was working on a film about war resisters and married Greer who is a Canadian citizen. The marriage should have resulted in granting him legal resident status. He is currently waiting on that announcement from the Canadian government.
His mother, Anita Anderson, has filled the press in on this month's developments -- this month is when Darrell Anderson told his mother that he was planning on returning to the United States. According to his mother's statements near the start of the month, Darrell was going to return to the United States if the Canadian government did not offer him status. Anderson himself spoke to Jim Warren of The Lexington Herald-Leader for an article published yesterday and it seems the return is no longer in doubt.
The current plans are to cross the border back into the United States, hold a press conference and then return to Fort Knox. He told Warren, "I decided that I've got to go back and get this over with once and for all, instead of living in limbo up here forever."
During the Vietnam era, activists advocated for an amensty for those who dodged the draft and those who decided to check themselves out. With the end of the war, the fall of Richard Nixon with the Watergate exposures, and a new president named Jimmy Carter, it was thought that such a policy was possible. That did not happen. Carter granted amnesty to those who dodged the draft. Those who self-checked out were to be handled on a case by case basis. That was the best that government was willing to do as that illegal war came to a close.
It is highly unlikely that anything's changed in today's political climate. (The amnesty decision was a political decision.) Those who go to Canada know this. The War Resisters Support Campaign provides them with resources, support and information. (And is a worthy charity to donate to.) It is a difficult decision and coming back to the country for any reason (including the funeral of a parent) means risking arrest.
For Anderson, with no work permit due to his status, Canada meant struggle including living with his Post-Traumatic Syndrome from his experiences in Iraq. Loud noises still startle him after the roadside bomb, sleep usually means nightmares of reliving the experience. For those reasons and others, he made the decision to return to the United States and, in his words to Jim Warren, "I decided that I've got to go back and get this over with once and for all, instead of living in limbo up here forever."
What can happen next? He could be dishonorably discharged and that would be the end of it. More likely, he will face an Article 32 hearing for desertion and then a court-martial (which could result in jail time). What happens to Darrell Anderson largely depends on us. Are we willing to speak out? Are we willing to show support?
We're sure the usual suspects will show up for their one-off "Baby cried the day the circus came to town" coverage and that's not going to be good enough. That's not going to do anything. Well, it will let the usual suspects kid themselves that they "covered" the story. It's not a one-day story.
However the media decides to treat it, we have to be willing to keep this issue alive. Ehren Watada is a success story in terms of attention. It seems, however, as though Kevin Benderman (currently serving a sentence) has been forgotten.
Darrell Anderson remains opposed to the illegal war. He is a war resister. Anita Anderson intends to be outside Fort Knox and maybe some can be their physically, maybe some can be their in spirit. But how much we work to keep this issue alive will impact the outcome. As Patti Smith sang and wrote "People Have The Power." But they have to use it.
More information on Darrell Anderson (and other war resisters) can be found at Courage to Resist.

From The Common Ills -- "Iraq snapshot"
Monday, September 25, 2006. Chaos and violence continue in Iraq, the US military fatality count crosses another marker with little attention, Iran continues to be the focus for Bully Boy's continued war lust, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld gets a blistering critique, the 1st Brigade of 1st Armored Division learns that promises of returning home are meaningless as their tour of duty in Iraq gets an extension, war resister Darrell Anderson continues to prepare for his return to the United States, in England Tony Blair comes under criticism from both a would-be-prime-minister and his sister-in-law, and the much trumpeted digital images of of Australian troops playing "cowboy" do not include photos or footage of Jake Kovco.
After being awarded the Purple Heart and returning from Iraq, Darrell Anderson was informed he was being redeployed to Iraq. Anderson elected to self-check out from the military in January 2005 and went to Canada. Earlier this month Anita Anderson confirmed to the press that her son was considering returning to the United States. Darrell Anderson was on a delayed honeymoon with Gail Greer (whom he met when she was part of a team making a documentary on war resisters). (The documentary was Albert Nerenberg's Escape to Canada.)
Anderson spoke with Jim Warren (Lexington Herald-Leader) for an article published Saturday where he confirmed that he was returning to the United States at the end of this month (Saturday), explained his reasons for the decision and stated, "I decided that I've got to go back and get this over with once and for all, instead of living in limbo up here forever." Today, Natalie Pona (Toronto Sun) reports that Anderson has again stressed that his decision does not mean the end of his war resistance and that Anderson explained, "To go back and do my prison sentence would just give me freedom. I just want to get in my uniform, go to trial and stand there and tell them I won't participate in their war." Anderson will hold a press conference when at the border and, if not immediately arrested once returning to the US, he will next go to Fort Knox to turn himself in.
More information, on Anderson and other war resisters, can be found at Courage to Resist. For the context of Anderson's decision, see Ruth's Report and for the need to speak out see The Third Estate Sunday Review's "Editorial: Darrell Anderson Needs You."
Anita Anderson has stated she intends to be outside Fort Knox demonstrating her support for her son's stance. As Troy Garity notes in David Zieger's documentary Sir! No Sir!, ". . . in the summer of 68 as thousands of supporters protested the jailing of the Presido 27, the G.I. movement had arrived." Those who learned of Camilo Mejia's brave stand, or Aidan Delgado, or Pablo Paredes, or any other war resisters after the fact can make a difference now by showing their support for Darrell Anderson as well as Ehren Watada, the first comission officer to publicly refuse to serve in Iraq who awaits the military's decision on their next course of action as the Article 32 finding of his case winds its way through the military structure. Ricky Clousing who turned himself in at the start of last month has been charged with desertion and there's no word yet on any charges against Mark Wilkerson who turned himself in at the end of last month. Both war resisters elected to self-check out of the military.
On Sunday, Mark Mazzetti (New York Times) reported on the National Intelligence Estimate entitled "Trends in Global Terrorism: Implications for the United States ("represents a consensus view of the 16 disparate spy services inside government") which, Mazzetti reports, "asserts that Islamic radicalism, rather than being in retreat, has metastasized and spread across the globe" and "cites the Iraq war as a reason for the diffusion of jihad ideology." Safer but not safe, once claimed the Bully Boy. As Karen DeYoung (Washington Post) reported, "The NIE . . . coincides with public statements by senior intelligence officials describing a different kind of conflict than the one outlined by President Bush in a series of recent speeches marking the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks." CBS' Bill Plante summarized the points of the NIE as follows:
*The U.S. presence in Iraq is providing new recruits for militant Islam.
*The movement has spread and is now "self-generating."
*While inspired by al Qaeda, the radical movement is no longer directly tied to Osama bin Laden.
*Because of the Internet, the radical Islamist movement is more connected and no longer isolated.
The reporting on the NIE follows a number of recent reports including Harper's magazine and IPS's reports from last week. For Harper's, Ken Silverstein interviewed, former CIA veteran (15 years) and former head of the Political Islam Strategic Analysis Program, Dr. Emile A. Nakhleh who noted that Iraq war has resulted in the loss of "a generation of good will in the Muslim world" and stated, "There's a civil war in Iraq and our presence is contributing to the violence. We've become a lightening rod -- we're not restricting the violence, we're contributing to it. Iraq has galvanized jihadists; our presence is what is attracting them. We need to get out of there." Noting that interview, Jim Lobe (IPS) also connected Nakhleh's statements to Paul Pillar's Foreign Affairs (periodical of the Council on Foreign Relations) essay at the start of this year following Pillar's retirement from the CIA in 2005. Lobe notes that Pillar addressed the issue of "the [intelligence] communiy had warned policymakers before the Iraq invasion that the war and occupation would 'boost political Islam and increase sympathy for terrorists' objectives' and that a 'deeply divided Iraqi society' would likely erupt into 'violent conflict' unless the occupation authority 'established security and put Iraq on the road to prosperity in the first few weeks or months after the fall of Saddam (Hussein).'"
Obviously, that did not happen. Meanwhile Australia's ABC reports the NIE's impact in Australia which has led the Federal Opposition demanding that John Howard (the country's prime minister) "come clean about the effects of the war in Iraq" and "Labor's foreign affairs spokesman, Kevin Rudd, . . . [saying] Mr. Howard should release the Australian intelligence agencies' findings about the war. 'Let's have some honesty in the debate,' he [Rudd] said."
This as, in England, the would-be-prime-minister Gordon Brown, dubbed the second most powerful man in British government -- Chancellor of the Exchequer, Labour party and wanna-be-prime minister in waiting, makes noises of his own. AFX News reports that Brown stated today that"while there must be scope for emergency action, it is in my view right that in future, a parliament, not the executive, makes the final decisions on matters as important as peace and war." On Sunday, as reported by Great Britain's Socialist Worker, Tony Blair's sister-in-law, Lauren Booth, was among over 60,000 participating Saturday in the Time to Go Rally in Manchester and that Booth was chanting, "Yo Blair -- it's time to go, Blair." (*The report was written by Anindya Bhattacharyya.) And today, AFP reports, the White House via mouthpiece Tony Snow finally admitted that the Iraq war "fuel[s] the spread of jihadism".
And the chaos and violence continues in Iraq.
Bombings?
AP reports that a bombing in Ramadi claimed the lives of seven police officers and left seven more wounded. Reuters reports three police officers dead (and ten wounded) in Jurf al-Sakhar after an attack involving "[m]ortar rounds and a suicide truck bomber"; while in Yathrib a man is dead and his daughter wounded after "[a] mortar round landed near" his home.
Shootings?
AP reports that an attack on a police station in Musayyib left one police officer dead and six more wounded. Reuters notes a translator for the US military was shot dead in Najaf on Sunday; that an Iraqi soldier died today from gun shot wounds received Sunday in Balad.
Corpses?
Reuters reports that nine severed heads were discovered this weekend in Baiji and an additional one today -- "the decapitatated head of a police lieutenant, Sameer Hazim" while, near Baiji, an Iraqi soldier's corpse was discovered Sunday.
Today, the US military has announced the death of another US soldier who was today "near Mosul" and died later from his wounds. This follows Sunday's passing the 2700 mark for US troops killed in Iraq and the Army's claim (see above) that they are underfunded. Reuters reports that the 147,000 American troops in Iraq are seen by the military as insufficient and that, in addition to extending tours of duty, "The Army also is considering accelerating the deployments for some brigades in a move to try to stop sectarian violence among Sunnis and Shi'ites in Baghdad, the newspaper [Washington Times] reported, citing Pentagon officials."
Extending tours of duty? No, not the 172 Stryker Brigade. They were already extended when they should have been returning home in August. AP reports that the 1st Brigade of 1st Armored Division "will be kept in place for several weeks beyond their scheduled departure," that the families were notified of this today, and that the Brigade is comprised of an estimated 4,000 soldiers who are currently serving "in the vinicinty of Ramadi".
The extension comes as US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld faces a new round of criticism for his handling of his official responsibilities. AP reports that, in "a hearing by the Senate Democratic Policy Committee, Major General John R. S. Batiste stated "I believe that Secretary Rumsfeld and others in the administration did not tell the American people the truth [regarding Iraq] for fear of losing support for the war in Iraq" and that Major General Paul Eaton declared Rumsfeld to be "incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically," therefore, "Mr. Rumsfeld and his immediate team must be replaced or we will see two more years of extraordinary bad decision-making." Safer but not safe, claims the Bully Boy. Reuters reports that Batiste declared in the hearing today, "America [is] arguably less safe now than it was on September 11, 2001" as a result of the Iraq war. William Branigin (Washington Post) reports that Batiste and Eaton were joined by "retired Marine Col. Thomas X. Hammes" in calling for Rumsfeld's resignation and that all three served in Iraq and quotes Hammes stating, "While asking major sacrifices, to include the ultimate sacrifice, from those Americans who are serving in Iraq, we are not even asking our fellow citizens to pay for the war. Instead we are charging it to our children and grandchildren."
Meanwhile, Greg Zoroya (USA Today) reports that living wills are a new issue of concern to the US Army as "[a] growing number of troops are returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with severe brain damage" -- an estimated "250 troops who returned from war with head wounds that left them -- at least initially -- comatose or unable to care for themselves or respond to people. Brain injuries, most from roadside bombs, are the signature wound of the Iraq war."
Apparently the Bully Boy's Blood Lust cannot be satisfied because war with Iran appears to be next on the agenda. Norman Solomon (Common Dreams) examines how the media is covering (covering up?) the probably attack. And on Sunday, Ray McGovern spoke in San Francisco. Robert B. Livingston (San Francisco Bay Area Media) reports that McGovern stated his belief in Bully Boy launching a strike (bombing) on Iran before the November elections and why: "McGovern described an administration desperate to protect itself from justice. If Democrats win a majority in Congress impeachment proceedings against the president, for example, could actually proceed (irrespective of Rep. Nancy Pelosi's vow that impeachment is "off the table"). McGovern cited Bush's low popularity poll ratings as a major concern to those advising Bush, and alluded to how the administration hasn't hesitated to use other crises as a convenient way to capitalize on American's propensity to stand behind their government. " Noting the actions of Cindy Sheehan, CODEPINK and others, McGovern stated, "Women in this country have all the guts. We don't need good girls like Nancy Pelosi. We need strong women like Cindy Sheehan."
Last week, CODEPINK and NOW co-sponsored a Women's Day of Peace in Washington, DC atCamp Democracy. Feminist Wire Daily reports that Olga Vives, vice-president of NOW, addressed the issue of what's beeing cut (domestic programs for women and children) to pay for this war and NOW president Kim Gandy's remarks that "The violence in Iraq has already cost too many lives. Service members and civilians are dying every day in a conflict initiated by George W. Bush. Women must now come together and work toward ending the violence -- a goal that the US government seems incapable of accomplishing."
On the issue Olga Vives was addressing, the costs of the war are estimated to currently be $317, 400,000,000. A running counter can be found at Tom Hayden's website. The counter is a feature provided by the National Priorities Project and, on their site, US citizens can look at how the cost of the illegal war impacts their own areas as well as see how the cost short changes various programs. The costs continue to rise. As Peter Spiegel reports (Los Angeles Times) the US Army's General Peter J. Schoomaker made the decision to ignore the August 15th deadline for presenting the Army's 2008 budget plan to the Pentagon "after protesting to Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld that the service could not maintain its current level of activity in Iraq plus its other global commitments without billions in additional funding. The decision . . . is believed to be unprecedented and signals a widespread belief within the Army that in absence of significant troop withdrawals from Iraq, funding assumptions must be completely reworked, say current and former Pentagon officals."
In Australia, news of the digital images of Australian soldiers handling their fire arms in a manner that wasn't seen as professional came as the inquiry into the April 21st Baghdad death of Jake Kovco was winding down. The press was full of speculation that images of Jake Kovco were among the images shocking that nation -- discovered images which were certainly timed well. In the hearing, there was talk of Jake Kovco being a "cowboy" and playing with his gun. The talk had no supporting evidence and the witnesses (including one of Kovco's former roommates) spoke of "hearing" of their claims, not seeing it themselves. Whom did they hear it from? No names were given and the inquiry was apparently comfortable with that. As the issue of digital images showing Australian troops possibly mishandling fire arms continues to be reported by the Australian press, Jake Kovco's name comes up repeatedly. However, The West Australian reports Jake Kovco will not among those pictured because "[t]he internet images relate to the period 2003-05, long before Pte Kovco's unit was in that theatre".
In legal news, Reuters reports that three of the "Pendleton Eight" will face murder charges with the possiblity of, if found guilty, facing the death penalty for the April 26 death, in Hamdania,of Hashim Ibrahim Awad who was allegedly taken from his home, shot dead and a weapon placed near his body after. The three looking at the prospect of the death penalty if found guilty are John Jodka, Marshall Magincalda and Jerry Shumate. Meanwhile, CBS reports that footage believed to show the deaths of US soldiers Kristian Menchaca and Thomas Tucker had been posted online by a group claiming to be The Mujahedeen Shura Council and that a subtitle in the video footage reads: "The two soldiers belong to the same brigade of the soldier who raped our sister in Mahmoudiya." That is in reference to Abeer Qassim al-Janabi (who CBS names, unlike the New York Times) who was raped and killed -- also killed were her parents Qassim Hamza Raheem and Fakhriya Taha Muhasen and her five-year-old sister Hadeel Qassim Hamza -- on March12, 2006 in the town of Mahmoudiyah. On the rapes and deaths, CBS notes: "The U.S military has charged four soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division -- Spc. James P. Barker, Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, Pfc. Jesse V. Spielman and Pfc. Bryan L. Howard -- in the March 12 alleged rape and murder of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi in Mahmoudiya, about 20 miles south of Baghdad. Sgt. Anthony W. Yribe is accused of failing to report the attack but is not alleged to have been a direct participant. A fifth suspect, Pfc. Steven D. Green, was discharged from the army because of a 'personality disorder' before the allegations became known. He has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder charges and is being held in a civilian court in the United States."
In US election news, Dave Collins (AP) reports that War Hawk Down Joe Lieberman, who had earlier made concilatory noises to war critics, is back in Hawk drag and denouncing Democratic candidate for US Senate out of Conn. Ned Lamont's endorsement of a timeline for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq is "doomed to fail" (apparently like Lieberman's own bid for the Democratic nomination this go round) and would "weaken our security" (meaning that he's so busy thinking up smears, he's missed Sunday and Mondays newspapers -- see above for the NIE report). This comes as Joshua Frank (CounterPunch) reports that War Hawk Up Maria Cantwell has a campaign staff doing strange things including, reportedly, attempting to bribe Green opponent (and anti-war candidate) Aaron Dixon if he would bow out of the race. Frank reports: "As Dixon tells it, 'Mark [Wilson] called and basically told me that a lot of people have a lot of money within the Cantwell campaign, and he said that they could put on a fundraiser for Central House that would "blow my mind". He called a week later and basically told me the same thing. I didn't bite, ending this war is too important'."
Finally, Cindy Sheehan (at BuzzFlash) notes that Bully Boy stated on air to Wolf Blitzer: "Yes, you see - you see it on TV, and that's the power of an enemy that is willing to kill innocent people. But there's also an unbelievable will and resiliency by the Iraqi people.... Admittedly, it seems like a decade ago. I like to tell people when the final history is written on Iraq, it will look like just a comma because there is - my point is, there's a strong will for democracy." Of that idiotic statement, Sheehan writes: "That is 125 commas. With 2701 of our children killed and over 20,000 injured, I would have to type 182 lines filled with commas. Then, if we take in to account the low figure of 100,000 innocent Iraqis killed, I would need pages of commas."

The new Wacko Jacko (humor)

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- DC.

THIS JUST IN!

WACKY ALPHONSO JACKSON MAKES UP HIS OWN RULES!

ON THE TAX PAYER'S DIME!

HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT HEAD ALPHONSO JACKSON MADE WAVES IN MAY OF THIS YEAR CLAIMING HE DENIED A GOVERNMENT CONTRACT WHEN HE LEARNED THE CONTRACTOR HAD NOT VOTED FOR THE BULLY BOY.

UPON THE CONTRACTOR'S ADMISSION, ACCORDING TO JACKSON, "HE DIDN'T GET THE CONTRACT. WHY SHOULD I REWARD SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE THE PRESIDENT, SO THEY CAN USE FUNDS TO TRY TO CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE PRESIDENT? LOGIC SAYS THEY DON'T THE CONTRACT. THAT'S THE WAY I BELIEVE."

YES, BUT THE WAY TAX PAYER MONEY WORKS IS THAT YOU'RE NOT ALLOWED TO POLITICALLY DISCRIMINATE. JACKO DID GRASP THAT THE MONEY WAS THE U.S. TAX PAYERS AND NOT THE BULLY BOY'S TRUST FUND, RIGHT?

WACKO JACKO MANAGED TO DOGE THE BULLET THERE BUT HE'S BACK!

NOW THE CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION OF HUD'S OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL HAS RELEASED A 340 PAGE REPORT THAT FINDS WACKO JACKO "URGED STAFF MEMBERS TO FAVOR FRIENDS OF PRESIDENT BUSH WHEN AWARDING DEPARTMENT OF HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT CONTRACTS. . . . HIS CHIEF OF STAFF TOLD INVESTIGATORS THAT JACKSON, THE HUD SECRETARY, 'PERSONALLY INTERVENED WITH CONTRACTORS WHOME HE DID NOT LIKE . . . THESE CONTRACTORS HAD DEMOCRATIC POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS."

LOGIC SAYS WACKO JACKO GETS HIS ASS CANNED.

REMEMBER THE LORD GOD IS A FAMILY MAN, HE'S JESUS' FATHER. WE ARE QUITE CONFIDENT THAT ALTHOUGH MORE PEOPLE KNOW JESUS' FACE, THEY REALLY PUT A LOT OF WEIGHT BEHIND THE WORD OF GOD."

Bully Boy ties belief in democracy to literacy

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- NYC.

THIS JUST IN!

AT LAST AN ANSWER!

SPEAKING IN NEW YORK CITY TODAY, THE BULLY BOY OF THE UNITED STATES DECLARED, "YOU CAN'T REALIZE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY IF YOU CAN'T READ A BALLOT, OR IF YOU CAN'T READ WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE FUTURE OF YOUR COUNTRY."

IT IS THOUGHT THAT BULLY BOY'S ATTEMPTS TO TIE LITERACY INTO DEMOCRACY WAS AN ATTEMPT ON HIS PART OF LAYING DOWN A DEFENSE SHOULD HE BE CHARGED WITH WAR CRIMES FOR THE ILLEGAL WAR IN IRAQ.

IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT POSSIBLY LAURA BUSH WASN'T THE BEST PERSON TO HEAD THE GLOBAL LITERACY CONFERENCE.

SAID SECRETARY OF STATE CONDI RICE, "DID YOU SEE STANLEY & IRIS? JANE FONDA TAUGHT ROBERT DENIRO TO READ IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS. LAST LADY LAURA'S HAD WHAT, 30, 40? 60? YEARS NOW TO TEACH BULLY BOY HOW TO READ AND HE STILL CAN'T."

WHEN THESE REPORTERS CORRECTED SECRETARY RICE THAT BULLY BOY AND LAURA BUSH WILL HAVE BEEN MARRIED 29 YEARS IN NOVEMBER, SECRETARY RICE RESPONDED, "BITTER? NO, I'M NOT BITTER. IF HE WANTS TO STAY WITH TIRED & OLD, HAVE AT IT. IF HE DOESN'T KNOW A FRESH FREAK WHEN HE SEES IT, HIS LOSS."

The end of a love affair (humor)

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- DC.THIS JUST IN!

D.C. LOVE GOES SOUR!

ON A MUSICAL NOTE!

IT STARTED OUT SO WONDERFUL TODAY. BULLY BOY HELD A PRESS CONFERENCE AND, BECAUSE HE REMEMBERED TO ZIP HIS FLY, HE KNEW THE PRESS WOULD HAIL HIM AS A GENIUS.

BUT THE PATH OF LOVE IS ALWAYS ROCKY.

IT STARTED OFF WITH SO MUCH PROMISE. AT ONE POINT, BULLY BOY INTERRUPTED HIS TRAIN OF THOUGHT TO ANNOUNCE HIS LOVE: "DAVE? HE'S BACK!"

THE BEAUTY WAS DAVE STRETCH GREGORY.

BULLY BOY COULDN'T HELP BRAGGING ON HIS SPECIAL LOVE, "I MUST SAY, HAVING GONE THROUGH THOSE GYRATIONS, YOU'RE LOOKING BEAUTIFUL TODAY, DAVE."

BUT THEN TEMPERS FLARED AND BULLY BOY TRIED TO SILENCE HIS BOYFRIEND WITH A CRY OF "NEXT MAN!"

BUT STRETCH WASN'T HAVING ANY OF THAT.

DAVID GREGORY WAS ALL, "WHO DO YOU THINK I AM?"

AND BULLY BOY WAS BUSTING MOVES, SHAKING HIS HIPS, POINTING AT DAVE AND ALL, "DO YOU KNOW I MADE HIM LEAVE? DO YOU KNOW HE BEGGED TO STAY WITH ME? HE WASN'T MAN ENOUGH FOR ME?"

DAVE KEPT PROVING THAT HE DID BEG TO STAY BY REPEATEDLY BEGGING THE BULLY BOY IN FRONT OF EVERYONE.

BULLY BOY JUST KEPT SAYING "NEXT MAN" AND "DAVID, NEXT MAN PLEASE. THANK YOU."

AS TEMPERS FLARED, BULLY BOY STOPPED HIS FINGERS AND SAID, "GIRL, YOU BETTER RECOGNIZE THE GAME."

DISSED AND DISMISSED, IN SONG NO LESS, BY THE BULLY BOY. AFTER BEING CALLED "BEAUTIFUL". IT'S A HEARTACHE, STRETCH, NOTHING BUT A HEARTACHE.

The joint-posts

"Iraq snapshot" (The Common Ills)
Thursday, September 14, 2006. The chaos and violence continues in Iraq, William Caldwell gets lost in his own spin while Harry Reid comes out swinging, two US soldiers are dead, actions on the part of
Suzanne Swift result in some US Congressional support, Camp Democracy continues in DC, and 110 Australian soldiers return to Iraq from Australia.
William Caldwell IV, the liveliest Gabor in the Green Zone, explained the mounting corpses (about 100 in the last two days) discovered in the capital as "
murder-executions" -- as opposed to "group hugs"? Somebody ask Willie to adjust the bra strap before the commercial break's over. Not content with being the giddiest Gabor in the Green Zone, Caldwell also told reporters today that another major terrorist had been captured. CNN reports that the Ethel Mertz of the occupation won't identify the captured but will give lots of non-specific details and, apparently, whine that Fred won't ever take her out anywhere! The non-specific details will allow gas bags to fill in their own details and a non-story to eat hours and hours of psuedo-commentary and it certainly minimizes the tragic reality that two more American troops lost their lives.
CBS and AP report: "Two U.S. soldiers died Thursday in and around Baghdad, the U.S. Command said. The first soldier died from wounds in the early morning hours after his unit came under attack by small arms. The second was killed after his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad." AFP notes that the two deaths follow the Wednesday death of a US soldier as a result of "enemy fire" and CNN notes: "He was attached to the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, 25th Infantry Division."
If it seems like Willie Gabor isn't aware of the body count, the
AFP's reporting demonstrates US Senator Harry Reid is: "We have to change course in Iraq, we are approaching 2,700 dead American men and women, more than 20,000 wounded, a third of them greviously wounded, missing arms, and legs, and eyes, paralysis, brain damage. The cost is three billion a week. If Iraq is not in a civil war, I don't know what a civil war is, 100 killed yesterday, 100 killed the day before."
Today?
Bombings?
The
Associated Press reports two car bombs in Baghdad that resulted in at least ten deaths and thirty wounded. CBS and AP note the second blast, outside the passport office, "created a large crater in the street in front of the office, destroyed at least three cars, scattered debris and knocked down the walls of a neibhoring house".
KUNA notes four wounded as a result of a bomb in Mosul. Reuters notes a "sucicide bomber" in Tal Afar has left one police officer dead and two civilians wounded; a roadside bomb in Falluja has left five civilians dead and 15 more wounded; and that "[a] bomb struck a U.S. military vehicle in Ur district, northern Baghdad, as the coalition forces were starting a serach operation. Witnesses at the scene said smoke was rising from the area. The U.S. military said it was unaware of the incident."
Shootings?
The
BBC reports that a police officer "was shot dead on his way to work in Baghdad."
CNN identifies him as Col. Muthana Ali Hussein. Reuters notes that that a family of six ("including a three-month-old boy") "were shot dead in their home" in Baghdad.
CBS and AP note that two police officers were shot dead in a drive-by in Baquba while three people were shot dead in Ghazaniya. KUNA reports that a police officer was wounded in Kirkuk after being shot by "unidentified armed men". Reuters notes the death of a city council member (Abdulla Khalaf) and his son in Daquq; and "a police lieutenant--colonel" in Mosul.
Corpses?
CNN reports that 20 corpses were discovered in Baghdad ("most with signs of torture").
That's 53 that were reported dead so far today. (Includes the 20 corpses and the two U.S. soldiers.)
In peace news,
Haveeru Daily reports that war resister Mark Wilkerson, "[n]early two weeks after he turned himself in to his unit at Fort Hood in Texas, the baby-faced 22-year-old soldier is still awaiting word on his punishment." Wilkerson returned from Iraq and attempted to receive conscientious objector status only to be denied and told he was redeploying to Iraq. Wilkerson then self-checked out and was AWOL for a year-and-a-half. Writing of Wilkerson's August 31st announcement that he was turning himself in, Aaron Glant (IPS) noted: "Observers say these developments are reminiscent of the Vietnam War, when the refusal to fight by hundreds of thousands of soldiers was a major force toward U.S. withdrawal. According to journalist and Vietnam War resister Peter Laufer, 170,000 U.S. soldiers filed for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War. Between 50,000 and 60,000 fled to Canada. Others deliberately injured themselves or simply went AWOL." That topic is explored in depth in the documentary Sir! No Sir!, directed by David Zeiger. Wilkerson himself noted the historical connections writing, before his press conference at Camp Casey III, that "I am joining a long history of war resistors, many of whom have died for their beliefs and I know tomorrow they will be looking down on me and war resistors who are alive hopefully will respect what I have to say and I hope that with as big a stage as I am going to have tomorrow that I can make people proud of my message and that I can say everything I truly want to say."
At
his own web site, Mark Wilkerson reports his first week at Fort Hood "was a good week. . . . I've spent a lot of time speaking with fellow soldiers about how their experiences were in Iraq. And while some had better experiences than others, they all expressed how lucky they were to make it back to the U.S. alive. And some have expressed their anxiety about having to return to Iraq for possibly the third time -- Imagine -- Three year-long deployments to Iraq in 5 years! For anyone reading this, let that sink in for a moment."
In news of war resister
Suzanne Swift, actions on her behalf (a sit-in, phone calls, e-mails and faxes) have resulted in US Rep. Peter DaFazio of Oregon to promise "that he will be initiating a congressional investigation into" her case. Swift self-checked out of the Army after returning from a tour in Iraq where she has reported she was sexually assaulted. Supporters are calling for an honorable discharge of Swift.
In Washington, DC,
Camp Democracy continues, free and open to the public. Today's events includes participation from the Green Party: Joyce Robinson-Paul, Steve Shafarman and Bob Firtakis. Greens are due to speak "between 4:15 and 5:30 p.m." and will address topics including the 2004 election. This evening, Danny Schechter scheduled to be among the participants with a screening of his documentary WMD: Weapons of Mass Deceptions. Friday's topics include election reform, Saturday's peace with Pat Elder, Nadine Bloch, Kevin Zeese and others participating. And on Sunday, Camp Democracy will host a number of events and the theme will be Impeachment Day. Among those participating: Elizabeth Holtzman, Michael Avery, Ray McGovern, David Green, John Nichols, Marcus Raskin, Elizabeth De La Vega, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jennifer Van Bergen, Geoff King, David Waldman, Dan DeWalt, Steve Cobble, Anthony St. Martin, Cindy Bogard, Mubarak Awad, Susan Crane, Frank Anderson. The camp has daily activities and admission is free. A complete schedule can be found here. Free and open to the public with daily activites.
In Australia, Security Detachment IX returned from Baghdad. One member didn't return, Jake Kovco who died in Baghdad on April 21st.
Edmund Tadros (Sydney Morning Herald) reports that Jake Kovco's widow Shelley Kovco was there to greet those returning. Belinda Tasker (NewsCom) reports that Shelley Kovco "finally had the chance to speak to one of the men who was with him [Jake Kovco] when he died" -- Ray Johnson who has previously been identified as "Soldier 17." Dan Box (The Australian) reports: "With the unit's return, however, restrictions imposed by the inquiry on reporting the names of soldiers have been lifted. Although not legally binding, these restrictions were imposed for operational safety and have been followed by The Australian." While the second half of the last sentence is correct (The Australian and most others have readily followed the restrictions), the first half? That's the claim by the government, not established fact. Noting that "One of the cornerstones of our justice system is transparency," Anthony McClellan went on to point out (in The Australian, one week ago today): "When the inquiry began, it was set in a small room that could not accommodate all the media who wanted to be there. On occasions such as this, the media are the public representatives. We have a right to know what happened, and why. Was making it harder for the media to report a deliberate decision or an example of military contempt for civilians being privy to this tragedy? Or was it plain incompetence? Whatever the reason, it neatly encapsulates the past five months. The larger issue is the suppression of the identities of many of the key soldiers connected with Kovco's death. We read about them as Soldier 14, Soldier 17 and Soldier 47. Why? If this set of events had occurred in a civilian setting, they would certainly be named. But no, the names are kept from us because the soldiers are serving in Iraq. It was interesting to see defence chief Air Chief Marshall Angus Houston and Defence Minister Brendan Nelson squirming in public this week when asked why the names were being kept secret."
"
Soldier 19" is now identified as Rob Shore. "Soldier 14"? Belinda Tasker notes that he is Steve Carr. Box notes Carr is "a person of interest" to the inquiry into Jake Kovco's death due to his DNA being "found on the barrel of Kovco's pistol". The Herald-Sun notes: "The Kovco inquiry, at Sydney's Victoria Barracks, resumes on Monday for closing submissions. Ms. Kovco is to make a statement to the inquiry on Tuesday."

Mike passed on that he'd gotten a questions about all the joints posts I've been doing with Wally lately. Well, thank you, to Wally. That needs to be said first. What's happened is this is a really big time. My church has been involved in a lot of activities and we always are. However, we're helping out a neighboring church. A woman said, in February, she wanted to help with voter registration and information with the intent of making sure everyone knew what was going on locally, state wide and nationally. She thought she would have time for it but things always come up and she sent out a request for help. We've been doing a lot of visiting to make sure that their congregation is registered and knows where to vote. Three Cool Old Guys love doing this. I usually swing by the nursing center most evenings, pick them up, and we go around.

I'm still doing that and so is my church but we can cut back now because we've made sure everyone who wants to be registered to vote is and knows where the polling station is in their area. We have some literature from various campaigns (mainly local) and we offer it for any of the candidates. No one's taking the Republican literature which isn't a surprise since the church is mainly African-American. I sometimes wonder if the "Black Republicans" exist only on TV.
Last week, we went to a nursing home and Three Cool Old Guys loved that, comparing notes and seeing what the competition had to offer.

You may see joint-posts mid-October through the election because I'm signed up for a lot of turn out the vote activities, both through my church and a local organization.

Again, I owe a big thank you to Wally for inviting me to tag along on his posts. How it works is that Wally calls and we toss out ideas on news we've seen online. Wally generally likes to grab something fresher than what was in that morning's paper. It also needs to lend itself to humor.
So we'll toss around some ideas and then pick from there. After that, we rough out some stuff and then depending upon who has time, Wally or I will call C.I. to run it by. Since he started Bully Boy Press, Wally's a stickler for running it by C.I. when possible. Not in a "Do you agree?" manner. But more of a, "Does this play funny?" This week, C.I. thought of Barbara Howar as a substitute for Mary Hart and I wouldn't have thought of that but I got it as soon as Wally said "Barbara Hower." Other times it will be something like, "That sentence is funny but the joke might be funnier at the end."

C.I. asked me to please note that Wally on his own or Wally and I are "perfectly capable" of being funny on our own. Wally just likes to have a test audience.

Wally could do the posts on his own. I do contribute when we work together but he could very well come up with a post all on his own. He's helping me out by inviting me to joint post. I really appreciate that because this site would be dead otherwise. I would grab Thursdays because Elaine has a group she does and can't blog on Thursdays. But otherwise, I've booked up my time pretty solid.

Is it fun? It's a lot of fun. Wally's got a good sense of humor and if I was trying to do this by myself, I'd be lost, even if I had the time. So let me repeat, "Thank you."

So hopefully that clears up any confusion. Be sure to check out Wally's "THIS JUST IN! BULLY BOY'S WET NURSE LETS HIM DOWN!"

Three Cool Old Guys are writing about the things we've been doing for voting in tomorrow's column in the gina & krista round-robin so be sure to look for that.

Tore up from the floor up Novak says "Bring It!" (humor)

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- DC.

THIS JUST IN!

FRESH FROM LAST WEEK'S CATFIGHT, ROBERT NOVAK SAYS 'BRING IT!'

TORE UP FROM THE FLOOR UP ROBERT NOVAK IS STILL MENDING BRUISES FROM LAST WEEK'S CAT FIGHT WITH THE CORPORATE WORLD MUSE AND SOMETIME NEW YORK TIMES CONTRIBUTOR THOMAS FRIEDMAN.

AS MOST MAY KNOW, FRIEDMAN FELT NOVAK WAS TREADING ON HIS OWN DESIRES TO DRESS UP AS MARILYN MONROE WHEN NOVAK SHOWED UP AT THE HOME OF THOMAS AND BETINNA FRIEDMAN WEARING A BLONDE WIG AND BLUE EVENING DRESS ("STRAPLESS, THAT HUGGED HIM TOO TIGHTLY AROUND THE CHEST AND SEEMED TO RIDE UP INTO HIS ARM PITS WHICH PROBABLY EXPLAINED THE STAINS").

FRIEDMAN IMMEDIATELY LEPT TO THE CONCLUSION THAT ROBERT NOVAK WAS ATTEMPTING TO BE A "YOUNG MARILYN" MONROE.

IN FACT TORE UP FROM THE FLOOR UP NOVAK JUST WANTED TO WALK A MILE IN VALERIE PLAME'S HEELS AND FEEL WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO BE LOVED AND BEAUTIFUL.

THE CAT FIGHT BETWEEN FRIEDMAN AND NOVAK RESULTED IN MULTIPLE BRUISES FOR NOVAK AND 3 LOST TEETH AS WELL AS ONE NASTY SCRATCH ON FRIEDMAN'S RIGHT, FRONT HOOF.

FRESH FROM THAT CAT FIGHT, NOVAK'S SPOILING FOR ANOTHER AND SNARLING 'BRING IT!' TO RICHIE ARMITAGE, THE NEW BARBARA HOWAR OF THE D.C. SET.

PUTTING HIS WORDS WHERE THE FISH GETS WRAPPED, NOVAK HAS WRITTEN: "FIRST, ARMITAGE DID NOT, AS HE NOW INDICATES, MERELY PASS ON SOMETHING HE HAD HEARD AND THAT HE 'THOUGHT' MIGHT BE SO. RATHER, HE IDENTIFIED TO ME THE CIA DIVISION WHERE MRS. WILSON WORKED, AND SAID FLATLY THAT SHE RECOMMENDED THE MISSION TO NIGER BY HER HUSBAND, FORMER AMB. JOSEPH WILSON. SECOND, ARMITAGE DID NOT SLIP ME THIS INFORMATION AS IDLE CHITCHAT, AS HE NOW SUGGESTS. HE MADE CLEAR HE CONSIDERED IT ESPECIALLY SUITED FOR MY COLUMN."

ARMITAGE ALLEGEDLY RESPONDED, "HOW DARE HE ACCUSE ME OF NON-CHITCHAT. I'M THE CHITCHATTER OF D.C. I STOP IN AT BEAUTY PARLORS JUST TO HONE MY SKILLS. I'VE CHIT-CHATTED WITH THE BEST, I'VE CHITCHATTED WITH THE WORST. AND LET ME JUST SAY THAT ROBERT NOVAK IS NO RONA BARRETT!"

WITH THAT, ARMITAGE EXCUSED HIMSELF NOTING THAT HE WAS RUSHING OFF TO GO JUMP INTO THE SUPREME COURT FOUNTAIN.

WHEN GIVEN THE CHANCE FOR A REBUTAL, NOVAK SAID, "RICHIE IS ONE CRAZY B**CH."

BULLY BOY PRESS & CEDRIC'S BIX MIX -- DC.

THIS JUST IN!

ALBERTO GONZALES DOESN'T THINK CHRISTMAS IS SO HOT!

AND HE'S NOT TOO CRAZY ABOUT JULY 4TH EITHER!

SPEAKING TO THE GLITTERATI AT THE 54TH ANNUAL ATTORNEY GENERAL'S AWARDS CEREMONY, INTERNATIONAL BILLIE JEAN KING LOOK-A-LIKE AND ATTORNEY GENERAL SUCKED UP HARD FOR THIS YEAR'S J. EDGAR HOOVER MEMORIAL AWARD BY OPENING WITH, "THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE EVENTS OF THE YEAR." TAKE THAT CHRISTMAS AND JULY 4TH!

WEARING A SILK BLUE VERA WANG WRAP, OLIVE PARKA HIKING BOOTS AND A WRIST CORSAGE, GONZALES WAS KISSING MAJOR ATTORNEY BUTT AFTER HIS MYSTERIOUS SHUT OUT IN THE CATEGORY OF MOST VILE CREATURE IN LAW (INSIDERS SWEAR RICHARD POSNER IS A LOCK IN THIS CATEGORY).

DABBING A TEAR FROM HIS EYE (EMCEE ANTON SCALIA HISSED IT WAS A CROCODILE TEAR INTENDED TO GARNER SYMPATHY), GONZALES DECLARED, "SOMETIMES OUR JOBS REQUIRE US TO SPEND MORE WAKING HOURS WITH OUR PROFESSIONAL FAMILIES THAN OUR ACTUAL FAMILIES, AT HOME" BEFORE ADDING, "FORTUNATELY ILLEGAL, WARRANTLESS WIRETAPPING ALLOWS US TO KEEP A CLOSE WATCH ON OUR FAMILIES THE SAME WAY IT ALLOWS US TO SPY ON OTHER AMERICANS."

THE REMARK WAS GREETED WITH ONLY MODERATE LAUGHTER AND IT WAS, LOUDLY, NOTED THAT WHEN GONZALES TURNED TO LEAVE THE STAGE, THE BACK OF HIS WRAP WAS TUCKED INTO HIS PANTY HOSE.

THOUGH HE ARRIVED STAG, GONZALES INSISTED THAT RICHARD NIXON WAS HIS DATE FOR THE EVENING "IN SPIRIT."

CHENEY BUSTS A RHYME OR SOMETHUN'!

ORIGINAL GANGSTA DICK CHENEY, THE ORIGINAL OL' DIRTY BASTARD, CAME OUT SWINGING SUNDAY STATING THAT WAR CRITICS (OVER 63% OF THE AMERICAN ADULT POPULATION ACCORDING TO RECENT POLLS) WERE ENCOURAGING TERRORISM. SAID THE KRB/HALLIBURTON BLING-BLING MASTER, "SUGGESTIONS, FOR EXAMPLE, THAT WE SHOULD WITHDRAW U.S. FORCES FROM IRAQ SIMPLY FEED INTO THAT WHOLE NOTION, VALIDATES THE STRATEGY OF THE TERRORISTS."

SAID A FORMER WHITE HOUSE EMPLOYEE WHO STILL LURKS, AND SWEARS HE'S NOT SCOTTY MCCLELLAN, OF DA DICKSTER DUMPSTER DIVING REMARKS, "WHEN YOU AIN'T GOT NOTHING, YOU GOT NOTHING TO LOSE." WHEN TOLD HE WAS QUOTING BOB DYLAN, THE FORMER INSIDER SWORE THAT WAS NOT THE CASE AND BEGGED THAT THESE REPORTERS FIND A TOBY KEITH LYRIC TO SUBSTITUTE INSTEAD.

NO SOONER DID THE FORMER INSIDER BEGIN SWEATING THAN DA DICKSTER AND HIS DICK POSSE SWUNG BY.

"YEAH, I SAID IT, WHAT YOU GONNA F**KING DO ABOUT IT?" CHALLENGED DA DICKSTER AS HE ATTEMPTED TO THROW GANG SIGNS BUT ENDED UP LOOKING LIKE A DRUNKEN CROSSING GUARD. "I'LL SAY IT AGAIN. WORD TO YOUR MAMMA!"

WHEN THE SUBJECT WAS CHANGED TO THE ISSUE OF HIS POSSE, DER DICKSTER GRABBED HIS CROTCH AND EXCLAIMED, "THEY ALL UP IN MY JOCK! AT LEAST I AIN'T ROLLING WITH NO 'FART POSSE' WHICH IS WHAT OL' BULLY BOY GOT GOING ON. WORD."

WHEN THESE REPORTERS ASKED HIM OF STATEMENTS THAT THE AL-ANBAR PROVINCE IN IRAQ WAS PROBABLY LOST, DER DICKSTER BEGAN A LENGTHY SHOUT OUT TO HIS 'PROPERS' (WE BELIEVE ADOLF HITLER GOT NAMED CHECKED SOMEWHERE BETWEEN AUGSTO PINOCHET AND P.W. BOTHA) UNTIL HE GOT SO WORKED UP THAT THE DICK POSSE HAD TO PUT DA DICKSTER ON A GURNEY AND GIVE HIM WHAT WAS CALLED "A JUICE UP."

RISING OFF THE GURNEY, CHENEY SWORE HE WAS HE WAS CLASSIC '67 FORD MUSTANG AND NOT A GREMLIN OR PINTO HEADED FOR THE JUNKYARD CAUSING SHOUTS OF "WORD!" FROM HIS POSSE.

HE THEN ADDRESSED THE CLAIMS THAT AL-ANBAR WAS LOST.

"ANYONE WHO BE LAYING DOWN THAT LINE IS LIKE A TOTAL COMMIE, MOTHER F**KING, TERRORIST! YOU FEEL ME? YOU FEEL ME?" HE ASKED HAND EXTENDED IN SOME SORT OF LOW-FIVE EXPECTATION.

WHEN TOLD THE ONE MAKING THE STATEMENTS THAT AL ANBAR WAS PROBABLY LOST WAS MARINE COL. PETE DEVLIN, DA DICKSTER BEGAN TO SOB.

"WHO'S GONNA LOVE MY ASS?" HE SOBBED. "SERIOUSLY, WHO'S GOING SHOW THE DICK MAN JUST A LITTLE LOVING?"

A SOMBER POSSE THEN LED HIM AWAY.

BULLY BOY SAYS, "MY BAD".

THE SENATE INTELLIGENCE COMMITTEE'S REPORT WAS RELEASED TODAY AND IT FOUND "NO EVIDENCE SADDAM HUSSEIN HAD A RELATIONSHIP WITH TERRORIST ABU MUSAB AL-ZARQAWI OR HIS AL-QAIDA ASSOCIATES BEFORE THE IRAQ WAR."

ON AUGUST 21ST, BULLY BOY STATED: "I SQUARE IT BECAUSE IMAGINE A WORLD IN WHICH YOU HAD SADDAM HUSSEIN WHO HAD THE CAPACITY TO MAKE A WEAPON OF MASS DESTRUCTION, WHO WAS PAYING SUICIDERS TO KILL INNOCENT LIFE, WHO HAD RELATIONS WITH ZARQAWI."

WHEN CONFRONTED TODAY, BULLY BOY FIRST ATTEMPTED FART HUMOR.

THEN HE SHRUGGED AND SAID "MY BAD" BEFORE RUSHING TO MAKE A SPEECH ONCE AGAIN FALSELY LINKING SADDAM HUSSEIN AND 9-11.

Who bedded down with the Nazis?

"Iraq snapshot" (The Common Ills)
Thursday, September 7, 2006. Chaos and violence continue in Iraq, in Australia -- Brendan Nelson learns the morning after isn't always pleasing; a US soldier who went AWOL to Canada may be returning; Bully Boy & the GOP continue "
Dirty Depends" actions, in Baghdad -- puppet of the occupation Nouri al-Maliki closes a TV station, al-Maliki also calls it "a great day" as Iraqis and US soldiers die throughout Iraq; and Camp Democracy continues in Washington, DC.
Starting with the US soldier who may be returning.
Jim Warren (Lexington Herald-Leader) breaks the news that war resister Darrell Anderson "wants to come home." Anita Anderson tells Warren that she's urging her son Darrell not to come back "because he's probably going to get sponsorship in Canada now that he is married to a Canadian girl. But he's constantly stressed out and worried, and he feels like he can't live out the rest of his life this way."
War Resisters Support Campaign notes this of Darrell Anderson: "Darrell Anderson arrived in Toronto from Lexington, Kentucky in Januray 2005. He served 7 months in Iraq and was awarded a Purple Heart after being wounded by a roadside bomb. When faced with a second deploymnet to Iraq, he chose instead to come to Canada. His experience in Iraq convinced Darrell that the war was unjustified. Innocent civilians are being killed, and young soldiers are dying for an illegal war. 'Coming to Canada doesn't ruin your life,' said Darrell, 'it saves lives.'"
On the redeployment,
Anderson told Gary Younge (Guardian of London): "I was supposed to leave for Iraq on January 8th. On the 3rd I started to talk to people about the war. By the 6th I woke up and had hit a brick wall. I just knew I wasn't going to be able to live a normal life if I went back."
His mother Anita Anderson cites his reasons for wanting to return as economic, his PTS has gotten worse and that he wants to make.
Darrell Anderson needs to make the choice that will serve him best. Should he remain in Canada, he will be part of a movement that includes Brandon Hughey, Kyle Synder, Jeremy Hinzman, Patrick Hart and others. He will also be part of a historic movement. (And it needs to be remembered that even in the wake of Watergate, Jimmy Carter, as president, would not grant an amnesty to those who checked themselves out. The amnesty only covered those who avoided the draft, not those who enlisted and checked out.) If he returns to the US, as his mother fears, he will be part of a movement of refusal. This summer has seen
Ehren Watada become the first officer to publicly refuse to deploy to Iraq. We also saw Ricky Clousing and Mark Wilkerson turn themselves in.
There is bravery in either stand and Darrell Anderson needs to make the choice that's right for him. Like
Cindy Sheehan, he's already done his part and then some.
Turning to cowardice, the Bully Boy continues his
Dirty Depends campaign with the hope that it will scare up votes for the GOP in November. Which is why he boasts of his unconstitutional secret prisons, extends the national emergy act from 9-11 and attempts anything to change the topic away from Iraq. As Matthew Rothshchild noted on The KPFA Evening News yesterday, Bully Boy can't run on the war. How true that is gets brought home in a recent report by the AP that notes Bully Boy is losing his "once-solid relationship with Southern women" and quotes "self-described Republican since birth and the mother of three" Barbara Knight stating, "I think history will show him to be the worst president since Ulysses S. Grant. He's been an embarrassment."
AP notes: "The movement of some Southern women away from the Republican Party tracks with national poll results showing that women have become more disillusioned with the war and were more likely than men to list the conflict as the important issue facing the country." AP cites their own polling numbers and they track with Ms. Magazine's poll which earlier (poll conducted from May19th to 22nd) found 55% of women (43% of males) wanted US troops withdrawn "immediately or next year."
And in Iraq?
On
KPFA's Flashpoints yesterday Nora Barrows Friedman spoke with Dahr Jamail about life on the ground in Iraq. Jamail: "Overall the situation in Iraq is worse than ever . . . but particularly in al-Anbar province. The US military really doesn't have much control of anything there, outside of the areas around their immediate, or inside, I should say, their immediate bases. . . . It's important the people remember that Ramadi is the capital of al-Anbar province. So what the US has done there to try to get control of that city is there's an area right in the middle where the government offices are centrally located in Ramadi and the US has been unable to keep people, resistance fighters, from attacking the government offices. So, as a result, what they're doing is literally demolishing, making a no-man's-land between, all of the buildings between the government offices in the middle of the city and then the rest of the city. So they're literally leveling at least eight city blocks, an area of at least eight city blocks, around those government offices to try to prevent them from being attacked so regularly. Of course what this is doing is infurating people of Ramadi who are saying, 'Look, you've already destroyed so much of our city, you've already launched massive operations in here . . .' Recently snipers, US snipers have killed at least four people there, mostly women and children. Just one travesty after another has been occurring inside Ramadi. The people are angry and now this takes it to a whole nother level where the people are outraged, they don't really know what to expect next. And, of course, the end result of these brutal, heavy-handed military tactics, just like we saw in Falluja, it doesn't actually stop the resistance. It maybe pauses it for a few days, or a few weeks. But then in the end it generates more people. It really causes more people to join the resistance or become sympathetic towards them if they're not already."
Two of the three US troops (one Marine, two soldiers) who died on Wednesday (
US military announced deaths today) died of wounds received in al-Anbar province. The US government has announced that another Marine has died today from "wounds sustained from enemy action while operating in Al Anbar Province September 6."
Oh, but, as the BBC reported, Nouri al-Maliki called it a "
great day". He was referring to supposed "control" handed over by the US (to him, the puppet) of the Iraqi military. It's not really a handover. It's more like, "Here are the keys to the car and if you do everything we say, we might let you take it for a spin on the weekend but, right now, it's still our car." Which is why "[a] BBC correspondent in Baghdad says the transfer of control could be long, slow and fraught with problems."
Bombings?
AFP notes "a suicide bomber ploughed his explosives-laden car into a police fuel depot in the town centre, killing at least 12" police officers in Baghdad. AP notes another bomb, also in Baghdad ("hidden under a parked car") that killed three and wounded 20. Reuters notes two roadside bombs, also in Baghdad, that claimed the lives of two and left seven wounded while another roadside bomb, still in Baghdad, killed one person and left two wounded and, still in Baghdad, another roadside bomb left four wounded. Outside of Baghdad? Reuters notes four police officers were wounded by a roadside bomb in Kirkuk.
Shootings?
Reuters notes that two police officers were shot dead in Baghdad (four civilians wounded); a police officer was shot dead in Hay; and, in Mosul, a man and a woman were shot dead in parking lot while a father and his teenage son were shot dead elsewhere in the city.
Corpses?
CNN reports four corpses were discovered today in Baghdad. Reuters notes six corpses discovered in Mosul ("multiple gunshot wounds"), three corpses were discovered (one, a female, was beheaded) in the Tigris river near Suwayra and two were discovered in Kirkuk ("signs of torture").
On the subject of deaths,
AP is reporting that contrary to the hype, there was no decrease in the figures for violent deaths in Baghdad. As Aileen Alfandary noted on KPFA's The Morning Show today, the US government had attempted to earlier say the numbers had lowered as a result of the 'crackdown' when in fact, August's actual numbers were "the same number as July."
And the
BBC reports that Mahmoud al-Mashhadani's nephew has been kidnapped in Baghdad. al-Mashhadani is the speaker of Iraq's parliament and was also the target of a He's-Out-Of-Here-So-Out-Of-Here campaign at the end of July and start of August. al-Mashhadani remains in parliament, his nephew Ahmed al-Mashhadani has been kidnapped.
al-Mashhadani is Sunni and switching to parliament news, yesterday
AFP reported: "Iraq's dominant Shiite alliance submitted a draft of a new law to govern the division of the country into autonomous regions". Today the Associated Press notes that Mahmoud al-Mashhadani "interrupted a stormy legislative session on Thursday after a draft bill submitted by the largest Shia party led to accusations from Sunni Arabas that they were trying to divide the country." al-Mashhadani: "The parliament speaker does not know about this draft bill. Is that credible? Who else should know about it if the speaker does not know? When was it announced?"
Switching to the issue of broadcasting, were they showing episodes of Barney Miller or NYPD Blue? Who knows but police pulled the plug on the satellite network al-Arabiya in Baghdad.
CNN was told by a company official (Najib Ben Cherif) that the offices "is being shut for a month." AP is iffy on who gave the order but notes that Nouri al-Malike started making warnings/threats to television stations back in July. CNN reports: "A news alert on Iraqi State TV said the office of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki ordered the office closed for a month."
In the United States,
Camp Democracy continues, free and open to the public, five tents worth of activity and more in Washington, DC. Tomorrow's activities include a focus on labor issues. A complete schedule can be found here.
In Australia, the inquiry into the April 21st Baghdad death of Jake Kovco continues -- probably much to the regret of Chuckles Brendan Nelson.
Yesterday, Nelson, the Defence Minister, sought to deny statements, credited to him in the press, made back when he saw himself as Johnny-On-The-Spot and felt that the nation needed each unparsed idea that tumbled from his mouth. Today?
Malcolm Brown and Cynthia Banham (Sydney Morning Herald) report that "Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, has contradicted the Minister for Defence, Brendan Nelson on key events surrounding the death of Private Jacob Kovco." How so? Dan Box (The Australian) sums it up as Houston states Nelson "had ignored repeated warnings not to speculate about the death" and that Houston denies evey telling Nelson that Jake Kovco had been "handling his weapon in some way and it discharged."
As
AAP notes this "directly contradicts" Nelson's statement yesterday and, in addition, Houston states that he "told the minister several times that a proper investigation was needed". What was Chuckles Nelson, the 'rising star,' doing issuing those statements (statements he had to retract and yesterday attempted to disown)? Justin Vallejo (Daily Telegraph) notes that the statements came after Nelson was warned not once, not twice, but three times (by Houston) "that it was too early to speculate". But when your a 'rising star' and you can interject into a national story, even if your actions cause more pain to the mourners, why sit on the sidelines waiting for information to come in? Russell Skelton (The Age) reports that the three warnings were given the day after Jake Kovco's death "[b]ut Dr Nelson went ahead and told the media that Private Kovco was shot while 'maintaining' his nine-millemetre Browning pistol -- a statement he was forced to retract five days later."
Let's be clear. No one knows what happened in the room where Jake Kovco died. (Or, if they do, they're not telling.) However, the reason polls demonstrate Australian's haven't bought the official story (whatever it was from week to week) goes directly to Brendan Nelson, with all the authority of his post, declaring X one week and then saying Y the next. Now Houston
and Lieutenant-General Peter Leahy have both denied that they ever provided Nelson with any of the information he (Nelson) took to the airwaves with.
If the grief and heartache his statements have inflicted upon the Kovco family isn't enough to give pause, it needs to be noted that the doubts about the inquiry have their roots in Nelson's very public, ever changing story.
Anthony McClellan (The Australian) lays it out very cleary noting: "It has taken a clear cry this week from the Kovco family to help us understand how bad this is. The family is sitting there every day in Victoria Barracks in Sydney, listening, I would think with increasing incredulity, as incompetence after incompetence, and worse, is documented. The family has now taken its criticism even further from its intital rage over the mishandling of his body." McClellan notes the need for transperancy and calls the 'national security' claim (the excuse for not giving the names of the soldiers testifying) "plain bunkum" and closes with this:
To sum up, here's a short competency primer for Defence headquarters at Canberra's Russell Hill:
* Wrong body.
* Initial investigators underfunded, obstructed and overruled by army command.
* Interference in the investigation.
* Death scene not preserved; forensic evidence removed.
* Those present in the room allowed to clean up.
* A litany of miscommunication.
Can it get any worse? Yes. If we do not find out what really happened.

That's a lot of information. When you start thinking about all the above, you start wondering why the news isn't covering it? When they do cover it, they do it as a sub-story when the fact is this is a huge story. It's been a huge story for three years though, so maybe some 'reporters' aren't up to covering it?

I know C.I.'s column for the round-robin tomorrow. If you missed it, one of the people who slammed Harry Belafonte shows up a week late, tosses off a sentence about Rumsfeld and basically hides. Gina's going out of town for the weekend and she wanted to get as much as done as possible with the round-robin as early as possible. I sent C.I. something I saw online and got a call saying that Melissa had beat to me that one and it was tomorrow's column. So make a point to check out the gina & krista round-robin (which you should do every Friday, anyway).
Three Cool Old Guys have a great column too (they were working on it Tuesday when I visited) so check it out.

Now on the subject of who was a Nazi appeaser, let's dig into Bully Boy family history. Michael Donnelly's "Bush Family Values: About Those Nazi Appeasers" (CounterPunch):

George W. Bush's grandfather, former Connecticut Senator Prescott S. Bush was a Wall Street banker with Brown Brothers Harriman. (Averill Harriman was also instrumental in getting young Prescott into Yale and S&B.) Bush's maternal grandfather George Herbert Walker was the bank's first president. Walker built the famed Bush family estate at Kennebunkport on Walker Point. Prescott Bush joined W. A. Harriman & Company in 1926 and became its CEO.
Harriman Bank was the official Nazi financial conduit in the US. Closely tied to Fritz Thyssen, who proudly claimed in his 1941 book "I Paid Hitler" that he was the Nazi Party's first and greatest financial backer. The Union Banking Corporation (UBC) was a subsidiary of Harriman created by Walker and it was used for Nazi financial matters. Thyssen provided 100,000 gold marks ($10 million in today's dollars) to the Nazis in 1923 just prior to Hitler's failed putsch. By 1941, UBC held a private Nazi stash of over $3,000,000 ($36 million in today's dollars) in its New York vaults.
After the war, a Treasury Department investigation reported that during the two years after the Stock Market crash; "Thyssen dedicated his fortune and his influence to the single purpose of bringing Hitler to power. In 1932, he arranged the now famous meeting in the Düsseldorf Industrialists' Club, at which Hitler addressed the leading businessmen of the Ruhr and the Rhineland. At the close of Hitler's speech, Thyssen cried, 'Heil Herr Hitler'. By the time of the German elections later that year, Thyssen had succeeded in eliciting contributions to Hitler's campaign fund from all of the big industrial combines. He himself is reported to have spent 3,000,000 ($30 million today) marks on the Nazis in 1932 alone.
During 1933 Thyssen served as intercessor between von Hindenburg, von Papen, and Hitler. He brought them together at a secret meeting which laid the basis for the appointment of Hitler as Reichschancellor."
It was Thyssen, not Prescott Bush as some now claim, who was called "Hitler's Angel" by the New York Herald Tribune. He later fled Germany in 1939.
Even though Hitler had declared war on the US, it was still legal for UBC to conduct finances for the Nazis. But, after Pearl Harbor that outrage finally changed. After another ten months of Bush/Harriman/UBC work for the Nazis; in November 1942, under the Trading With the Enemy Act, all of the Harriman business interests were seized by the government, including UBC.
The assets were held by the government for the duration of the war and then quickly returned. Prescott Bush' interest in UBC consisted of One Share--worth $1,500,000 ($19 million in today's dollars) at the time UBC was disbanded in 1951. (The Harriman family garnered $4 billion!) It was the money used to start the Bush Family Texas oil empire.
Another Harriman subsidiary through Silesian Holding Co.; Consolidated Silesian Steel Corporation saw the Harriman-Bush group owning one-third of a complex of steel making, coal-mining, and zinc-mining activities in Germany and Poland. The other two-thirds were owned by Wehrwirtschaftsführer (Military Economy Leader) Friedrich Flick. Silesian Holding Company's president was George Walker and its sole directors were Prescott Bush and Averill Harriman.
Silesian Steel used slave labor from Auschwitz (even before the concentration camp was built there) in its coal, iron and zinc mining operations. At Nuremberg, Flick was sentenced to seven years for Silesian's role in building up the Nazi war machine. Harriman, Bush and Walker were never charged.

Even without knowing the above, it's offensive that the administration is comparing war critics to Nazi appeasers, but knowing the history and knowing who was in bed with the Nazis, it's even more offensive. Who was in bed with the terrorists of the last century? The Bush family. From Iran-Contra, to the Savings & Loan scandal, to illegal war in Iraq, it all comes down to the fact that a family of crooks have been getting away with it for decades.

That's one more reason Bully Boy needs to be impeached. Each generation gets more and more brazen. George H.W. Bush circumvented the Constitution (broke the Constitution -- like breaking the law but worse since the Constitution is the law of the land) with Iran-Contra and now Bully Boy completely disregards the Constitution. It's not enough to ride out the last two years, he needs to be impeached to send a message to the entire family that they are not above the law.

And if you hear that "Nazi appeasers" tossed at war critics, just remember who bedded down with the Nazis.
