The big Iraq news today? It's the Pope. CNN notes, "Pope Francis will travel to Iraq in March 2021, the Vatican press office announced on Monday." THE GUARDIAN adds, "The Vatican spokesman, Matteo Bruni, said the pontiff, who turns 84 next week, would visit the capital, Baghdad, and Ur, a city linked to the Old Testament figure of Abraham, as well as Erbil, Mosul and Qaraqosh in the Nineveh plains, from 5-8 March. It will be his first trip in more than a year after all his overseas visits were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic." Francis became the Pope (and became Francis) March 13, 2013. He was born, in Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio and took the name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Prior to the pandemic outbreak, the Pope had visited many countries including Cuba, Israel, the United States, Bosnia, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates. The visit to Iraq would be the Pope's first international visit in 15 months. Devin Watkins (VATICAN NEWS) explains:

The Pope’s visit will come as the realization of a dream of his predecessor, Pope St. John Paul II. The Polish Pope had planned to travel to Iraq at the end of 1999. That trip never came to be because after lengthly negotiations, Saddam Hussein postponed it.

According to Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, the Patriarch of Babylon of the Chaldeans, Pope Francis will receive an enthusiastic welcome to Iraq.

He told SIR news agency a year ago that “everyone in Iraq, Christians and Muslims, esteem him[Pope Francis] for his simplicity and nearness. His words touch everyone’s hearts because they are those of a shepherd. He is a man who brings peace.”

ALJAZEERA offers:

President Barham Saleh had officially invited Pope Francis to visit Iraq in July 2019, hoping it would help the country “heal” after years of strife.

About 100,000 Christians are left in Iraq following sectarian warfare after the 2003 invasion led by the United States and ISIL’s (ISIS) sweep through one-third of the country in 2014.

If the visit takes place in March of next year, it will be the first visit of any Pope to Iraq, as Philip Pullella (REUTERS) notes. It's also noted in the following Tweet:

Joshua J. McElwee (NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER) notes some reactions to the announced trip:

Catholic peace activists immediately praised Francis' choice to travel to Iraq.

Marie Dennis, the former long-time president of Pax Christi International, told NCR the trip is "a beautiful example of active nonviolence, a visible sign of stepping into violence in order to diminish its power and highlight the possibility of just peace."

Judy Coode, coordinator of Pax Christi's Catholic Nonviolence Initiative, highlighted the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on Iraqis. She said the country's healthcare system had been "decimated and overwhelmed" after years of war.

"Pope Francis' decision to visit Iraq calls our attention back to one of the most vulnerable communities on earth, a population terribly affected by Covid," said Coode. "He’s reminding us that the people of Iraq continue to struggle with a violent destabilization created by outside actors, including the United States."

His visit? It may take place. It's based on an improvement in the coronavirus cases -- counting on the numbers going down. If it takes place, it will come at a very needed time. UNAMI notes:

Reported COVID-19 cases across Iraq continue to rise but at a slightly lower rate than in previous weeks, with a regular average of 2,500 daily reported cases during November. In recent weeks, the Government of Iraq increased its testing capacity beyond 20,000 tests per day. Initial reports indicate that despite the increase in the number of tests, the daily number of COVID cases across the country is decreasing. The number of individuals who have contracted the virus as of 5 December stands at 564,200 cases, with over 62,000 additional cases in comparison to the last update. Close to 30 per cent of these cases have been detected in Baghdad, followed by Basrah, Erbil, Sulyimaniyah and Wassit Governorates, the infection rate is rising other governorates including Duhok. Similarly, the number of deaths has increased to a total of 12,432. The Government of Iraq (GoI) and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have conducted over three and half million tests.

The conronavirus takes a toll on society as a whole. It makes up stressed, depressed and exhausted. Some consider suicide. In Iraq, the suicide rate had already increased a year before the pandemic outbreak. Zainab al-Mshat (DARAJ) reported last month:

The number of suicide cases across Iraq reached 549 in 2019 ... The reasons behind them are many, including simply, "the pain of life." This is mostly due to the economic deterioration, and high poverty and unemployment rates in the country.

Because she didn’t have the courage to set her body on fire, shoot a bullet through her temple, or wrap a noose around her neck, Sanaa (26 years old) chose to swallow a mixture of pills that she’d gathered from the medicine available in her home. Hours later, her sister heard her moan, a sound that escalated as her pain intensified, and she was subsequently transferred to the hospital for gastric lavage.

Sanaa escaped her death by suicide, without her family knowing why she had done it. Her brother, who is seven years older than her and now lives in Germany, knew why: When Sana was fifteen, he had sexually assaulted her. She was having a glass of water in the kitchen, and when she closed the refrigerator door, she found her brother standing behind her, thrusting his body onto hers, and forcing his hand onto her mouth to prevent her from screaming …

Sanaa failed to commit suicide and survived, whereas 132 other women had “succeeded” from the beginning of 2020 until September 20. Additionally, 169 male cases of suicide were also recorded, bringing the total to 301 suicide cases recorded by Iraq in nine months. Baghdad topped the list with 68 suicides, distributed between 40 female and 28 male cases.

In the Shula district, west of Baghdad, Abdul Rahman (30 years) was found hung by a rope in his house, which was not a residence that was “suitable for human life,” according to his mother’s words. His father, the breadwinner of the family, died when Abd al-Rahman was ten years old, so the boy took responsibility for the family at an early age: “My son was not reluctant to assume this responsibility, although he did often complain about it. His bad luck prevented him from getting employed at a government job that would have been dignified, despite the fact that he had obtained a bachelor’s degree from the College of Administration and Economics at the University of Baghdad.”

U.S. PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP IS EXPECTED TO PARDON A TURKEY OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. IN RESPONSE TO THIS NEWS, JOE BIDEN'S CAMP HAD A MELTDOWN. BEN RHODES IS SAID TO HAVE HAD A SPONTANEOUS GROIN HERNIA UPON HEARING THE NEWS, SUSAN RICE INSISTED THAT, AT THE URGING OF VLADIMIR PUTIN, TRUMP WILL PARDON "A TERRORIST TURKEY -- A HOMEGROWN THREAT -- AND WE WILL ALL BE AT RISK. IT COULD EXPLODE IN AN OVEN! IMAGINE THE GIBLETS AND DRESSING EVERYWHERE AROUND THE KITCHEN -- ON THE FLOOR, ON THE WALLS, IN THE CHESS PIE -- THE CHESS PIE. GOOD LORD, JUST THINK WHAT MIGHT FLY INTO THE GREEN BEAN CASSEROLE!" Yesterday afternoon, the acting Secretary of Defense Christopher C. Miller addressed the press.

ACTING SECRETARY OF DEFENSE CHRISTOPHER C. MILLER: Good afternoon. I'm Chris Miller, acting secretary of defense, and I'm here today to update you on President Trump's plan to bring the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to a successful and responsible conclusion, and to bring our brave service members home.

From Kabul to Kandahar and from Mosul to Fallujah, hundreds of thousands of America's finest sons and daughters, who selflessly answered the call to serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard have brought us to this point. Their efforts and sacrifice will go down in history as epitomizing the strength, commitment, and empathy of a force that is unlike any the world has ever seen.

Just last night, I joined Vice President Mike Pence and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Milley to attend the dignified transfer of five American soldiers who perished on duty in the Middle East. This was a somber and humbling moment that reminded us of the tremendous sacrifices made by the men and women of the United States military in service of freedom and security.

Our armed forces take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. They serve not for personal gain, but for the protection and well-being of their fellow Americans and their homeland. They are champions for peace, liberty, and the rule of law, and unrelenting when called upon to defend our people and our values. We owe them and their loved ones an enormous debt of gratitude.

This is why I'm enormously blessed and privileged to stand before you today to outline the next phase of our campaign to defeat terrorists who have perpetrated attacks on our homeland, including those who help and harbor them, and to prevent -- prevent future acts of terrorism against our nation.

We owe this moment to the many patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice, and their comrades who carry forward their legacy. Together, we have mourned the loss of more than 6,900 American troops who gave their lives in Afghanistan and Iraq, and we will never forget the more than 52,000 who bear the wounds of war and all those who still carry its scars – visible and invisible.

In light of these tremendous sacrifices, and with great humility and gratitude to those who came before us, I am formally announcing that we will implement President Trump's orders to continue our repositioning of forces from those two countries. By January 15, 2001 – excuse me, I clearly am thinking of where this started in 2001 – by January 15, 2021, our forces, their size in Afghanistan will be 2,500 troops. Our force size in Iraq will also be 2,500 by that same date. This is consistent with our established plans and strategic objectives, supported by the American people, and does not equate to a change in U.S. policy or objectives.

Moreover, this decision by the president is based on continuous engagement with his national security cabinet over the past several months, including ongoing discussions with me and my colleagues across the United States Government.

I have also spoken with our military commanders, and we all will execute this repositioning in a way that protects our fighting men and women, our partners in the intelligence community and diplomatic corps, and our superb allies that are critical to rebuilding Afghan and Iraqi security capabilities and civil society for a lasting peace in troubled lands.

And just this morning, I spoke with key leaders in Congress, as well as our allies and partners abroad, to update them on these plans, in light of our shared approach. We went in together, we adjust together, and when the time is right, we will leave together.

One of my calls was to NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg. Another was to Afghanistan's President Ghani, who expressed his gratitude for every American service member who has fought for peace and strengthened the longstanding friendship between our countries.

President Ghani highlighted the caliber of our troops, which he noted has always been more important than the quantity. We continue to stand with him as his government works toward a negotiated settlement for peace.

Meanwhile, let us remind those who question our resolve or may seek to interfere with this prudent, well planned and coordinated transition – the United States armed forces remain committed to protecting the safety and security of the American people, and supporting our likeminded allies and partners worldwide.

If the forces of terror, instability, division, and hate begin a deliberate campaign to disrupt our efforts, we stand ready to apply the capabilities required to thwart them.

As a veteran whose life and family was irrevocably changed in the deserts, mountains, and cities of Iraq and Afghanistan, along with the hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops who have fought there and were forever transformed by their experiences, I celebrate this day, as we continue the president's consistent progress in completing the mission we began nearly two decades ago.

I want to thank the Afghans and Iraqis who have partnered with us throughout, and who now carry the bulk of the fighting to secure their homelands. I want to thank our NATO allies and other partners who have fought alongside us and taken the lead on training and advising the Afghan and Iraqi security forces. We will continue to support their efforts.

And thanks to our more than 80 partners in the Defeat ISIS coalition. We have destroyed the ISIS caliphate and will ensure they never again gain a foothold to attack our people.

In closing, we set out to accomplish three goals in 2001. First, go abroad and destroy terrorists, their organizations, and their sanctuaries. Two, strengthen our defenses against future attacks. And three, prevent the continued growth of Islamist terrorism to include by working with allies and local partners to take the lead in the fight.

Today is another critical step in that direction, and a result of President Trump's bold leadership. With the blessings of providence in the coming year, we will finish this generational war and bring our men and women home. We will protect our children from the heavy burden and toll of perpetual war. And we will honor the sacrifices made in service to peace and stability in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the world, and celebrate all those who helped us secure freedom over oppression.

God bless our women and men in uniform. Thank you very much.

This is a drawdown, not a withdrawal.

I'm not applauding. It's a step in the right direction, but I'm not applauding. When I saw headlines and heard gasbaggery on TV about the above, I thought, "Well I'm going to have to praise Donald." No, I'm not.

It's a drawdown, not a withdrawal. If we're bringing the wars to a close, why are US troops remaining there?

In terms of numbers? We already know from James Jeffrey's own mouth that we have no idea how many US troops are in the Middle East because he and others conspired to lie to US President Donald Trump so that they could countermand his orders.

The acting secretary says that Iraq will draw down to 2,500 US troops. If the number's correct, so what?

Don't tell me you're ending the Iraq War when you're not and when all you're doing is reducing US forces by 500 troops. In Monday's snapshot, we noted that there are supposed to be 3,000 US troops (officially) in Iraq. Bringing that number down by 500? A step in the right direction but it's not enough.

From the way some were being hysterical on TV, I thought Donald really was removing all US forces from Iraq except for those who guard the US Embassy. I was ready to praise him because the war needs to be over.

But all this is doing is removing 500 troops from Iraq.

Joe's got some confusion issues

SOUNDING LIKE THE GEEZER HE IS -- IF ELECTED, JOE WOULD BE THE OLDEST PERSON EVER ELECTED PRESIDENT -- FROWNED ON THE 'YOUNGSTER' HE IS RUNNING AGAINST FOR BEING 3 YEARS YOUNGER AND CRITICIZED ''HOW HE PLAYS.''

Last night, the last of the duopoly debates took place. A bi-partisan grift known illogically as the 'presidential' debates takes place every four years. The pretense is that it's a debate between presidential candidates; however, that's not the case. The Democrats and the Republicans control the debates so only their candidates make the stage.

The Libertarian Party has been making steady gains each cycle and, this year, their candidate is on the ballot in all fifty states. However, Jo Jorgensen did not make the debate stage because these are not the presidential debates. If they were, they'd have to include all candidates -- even if it was just the 'serious' ones however you wanted to define 'serious' -- and they don't. Again, Dr Jo Jorgensen is on the ballot in all fifty states and yet she was not on the debate stage last night. Howie Hawkins is the Green Party candidate and he was not on the stage last night. Gloria La Riva, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, was not on the stage last night. There were other candidates not on the stage. We no longer cover Joseph Kishore's campaign because, clearly, he and David North had made the decision to campaign for Joe Biden. This has led to nutty conspiracy articles at the SEP party's website of WSWS in which you've got Donald Trump leading a death and kidnap squad in the US. That is just beyond stupid. WSWS is calling out JACOBIN magazine currently and, in better times, their criticism might stick. But with their nutty, tin-foil hats on currently, they just look like crazy idiots. They realized that this week due to a huge backlash (over the pimping for Joe Biden) which has resulted in a significant loss of web traffic and major complaints from the readers who remain at WSWS so they quickly rushed out Patrick Martin's two-part series on the corruption of the Democratic Party. It's too little, too late for some.

For us? We'll go back to highlighting WSWS after the election. Related, I'm not interested in The Hip-Hop Caucus and feel a little like Jackson Browne when he ad libs during "Cocaine" the following line: "But I wouldn't have been a user, even one more day, if you'd shown me how I was helping turn a profit for the CIA." Indeed.

The Hip-Hop Caucus was highlighted here in the past because of their connection to Rosa Clemente who was on the 2008 Green Party presidential ticket (she was presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney's running mate). So I wrongly thought they were some sort of independent organization -- as they present themselves to be. But at the end of last week, when we stopped noting them, we stopped because I hovered over one of their links in an e-mail. They're raising money for the Democratic Party. Now I know no one enforces the damn law, but in a functioning democracy, they'd be facing charges and be stripped of their current tax status for that little stunt.

After the election, we may highlight them. But I don't approve of that nonsense. NOW's sent things to public account non-stop throughout this election cycle. We've ignored them for the same reason of lack of independence. NOW is legally prohibited from endorsing or campaigning for a presidential candidate. They get around it with NOW PAC but no one even pretends the two are separate anymore. NOW PAC makes the endorsement, NPR brings on the NOW president (not NOW PAC president) and introduces her as the NOW president and then talks about NOW (not NOW PAC) endorsing a president. NOW should lose its tax status. These are abuses plain and simple, flagrant disregard for the law. I'm not going to reward that. Shame on Hip-Hop Caucus Go to ACT Blue currently and you can get in line to donate, for example, to 'progressive' Dianne Feinstein's 2024 campaign.

That's both horrifying and whore-ifying. Dianne shouldn't have run for re-election last time, she's too damn old. And no one wanted to face that reality until this month's Supreme Court nominee hearings. Right before them, Democrats in power finally realized Dianne wasn't all there. Too damn bad. They had no right to remove her at this late moment. No, she shouldn't have been Chair. But all of the problems some people finally discovered? Those were the reasons those of us in California endorsed Kevin de Leon. Maybe if busybodies from out of state had kept their noses out of it, Kevin could have been in the Senate and the Democrats could have had a real chair in charge of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Idiots caused this problem or, as Judge Judy might say, "Don't crap on my carpet and tell me it's a decoration."

I'm not interested in fakery. Which is why we stopped Joseph Kishore's campaign. We do try to cover all campaigns that we can. That goes beyond the presidency. Anyone who sends a press release for their campaign has been noted. By the same token, any member of Congress that sends out a press release gets noted. This year that policy could have been tested.

A pedophile is running for the presidency -- no, that's not a joke about someone's son. There's a third party candidate who's connected with DEN and that means he's probably a pedophile. I believe the documentary OPEN SECRET and several witnesses have established that. He was part of the debate that put forward presidential candidates not part of the duopoly. We did note that debate twice -- once with a partial clip (that's all that was up) and once with the full debate when it was later posted. We quoted Gloria La Riva from that debate. We also posted Howie Hawkins from that debate when his campaign did an edit of just his remarks.

When we reported on it, and quoted Gloria and only Gloria, a few e-mails came in asking why we didn't list everyone who participated? Good question. I was pressed for time and I also didn't feel it was my job to promote the man in that debate who is a pedophile. Had his campaign sent in a press release, would it have gone up?

I say yes. But I'm truly glad it didn't come in.

And goodness knows, we have more than enough to cover.
